The Daily Wear #4

The Daily Wear 4

{1969 Destructed Real Straight Jeans – Gap ♥ Bracelet – Dyrberg Kern ♥ Slingback Wedges – Topshop ♥ OPI nailpolish in No Room for the Blues ♥ Burnout Raglan Tee – Topshop}

While being short (5’2″ in my case) has some advantages – like being able to buy clothes from the children’s section in H&M and never ever having to worry about towering over your other half when wearing heels – there are also some major drawbacks. I have been desperate to get hold of some distressed jeans but all the ‘regular’ ones seems to have been made for all you peeps with lovely long legs. I tried a few on (from Zara, J Brand and Current Elliott) but they all looked really strange on me as rips that should have been on the knee ended up halfway down my calf.

Normally my go-to denim brand is Paige – their Skyline Ankle Peg style is just the right length and fit for shorties like me, but they didn’t have any distressed styles. Then I came across these Gap 1969 Destructed Real Straight Jeans, which are also available in an ‘ankle’ length. Only problem was, my size was out of stock both online and in every London store (I had my poor husband check all the Gap stores on Oxford Street and rang the others myself) until last week when they suddenly flashed up on the website and I managed a snag a pair before they sold out again. The fit is not quite as good as my Paige jeans but then again they’re only a third of the price and I can easily see them becoming my perfect summer staple.

The Beauty Edit: Summer Wishlist

Summer Beauty Collage

Summer is finally here and it’s time to ditch the heavy makeup and opt instead for a lighter, more natural look. As much as I love an opulent  smoky eye and decadent red lip, it just doesn’t look right on sunny evenings. Here are some of the beauty products I’m planning to invest in this season:

1 Dior ‘Nail Glow’ – A slightly pink nail polish that enhances the natural colour of your nails to give them a light, healthy sheen.

2. St Tropez Self Tan Luxe Dry Oil – A moisturising non-greasy formula that gives a long lasting natural looking tan.

3. Laura Mercier Body Butter in Almond Coconut Milk – I always associate the smell of coconut with summer and this body butter is the ultimate in luxurious skincare.

4. Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb La Vie En Rose – A lighter version of my favourite fragrance that comes in a bottle “inspired by the iridescent wings of a butterfly”. What’s not to love?

5. Nars Matte Multiple in Anguilla – A non-sparkly version of the cult cheek & lip stick in a selection of vibrant and sun-kissed shades.

6. Clarins Rouge Eclat in Juicy Clementine –  The perfect lipstick for fair-skinned people like myself who want to embrace this summer’s trend for orange lips. Plus the name reminds me of my lovely daughter!

7. Mac Prep + Prime Highlighter – A pen-style highlighter that can be used over or under makeup to add radiance and a sheer wash of colour.

8. Ghd White Eclipse – I know it’s not great for my hair but I use my ghd hair straightener every day. This new version promises to style your hair in a single stroke while actually making it stronger.

Five on Friday

IMG_7029

{Where I spend most of my weekday mornings – working away at the computer while enjoying a takeaway latte and a bowl of granola.This last week I have gone swimming before work twice and I really hope I can keep that up as it has made a real difference to my energy levels. I’m also loving my new boxes from House Doctor as they make it so easy to keep the desk tidy}

IMG_7035

{I snapped a quick picture of the kids at school pick up earlier this week when the weather was still sunny. It is so rare for them to sit still long enough for me to capture all three. If you’re wondering why Clemmie is wearing a rosette, she insisted on putting it on after we read a book about a pony princess.}

IMG_7085

{Casper won the best Beaver Scout of the term award for being well behaved and selling the most programmes for their annual fair. I don’t know who was most proud – him or me!}

IMG_7059

{Despite having two older brothers, Clemmie is very girly. When I painted my toenails with my new blue OPI polish, she insisted I do hers as well!}

IMG_7084

{I bought this cute fashion stamp set at the V&A last Sunday. If you receive a card from me in the near future, expect to see some of these stamped inside.}

My husband has taken the boys out to the theatre tonight (Casper was given the tickets for being the top programme seller at Beavers!) so it’s just Clemmie and I at home. Very quiet for a change! Hope you all have a wonderful weekend. X

Five on (almost) Friday

I’m a day late with my Five on Friday post but it’s been a busy week. Last night was spent pricing up the last few items for the aforementioned NCT sale and this morning we dropped off two carloads of stuff at the local Sixth Form college where the sale is held. Fingers crossed it all goes! I’m not too bothered about the money but any unsold items have to be collected this evening and I really don’t want any of it back.

We also took six large bags of children’s clothes to the charity shop so at least I can see the floor in my bedroom again. But a temple of minimalism it ain’t (yet..) – six zip-up bags stuffed full of winter gear are going back up to the loft for the next sale in October. One step at a time…

{It has been rainy this week and there is still a chill in the air but spring has officially arrived, which means switching from dark polishes to pastels and neon. I love this Chanel ‘Riviera’ polish – sadly it was a limited edition four years ago and is no longer available.}

20140503-170715.jpg

{We have also officially entered the Princess Stage and this week both Rapunzel and Cinderella accompanied me on the school run. Princess dresses are fine for sitting in the buggy but no so practical when the little lady wants to get out and run around the playground or jump in puddles.}

{I finally booked tickets to go and see The Glamour of Italian Fashion at the V&A later this month. It promises to be a great exhibition with high octane outfits by the likes of Gucci and Dolce & Gabbana. Can’t wait!}

20140503-170724.jpg

{How cute are these pink Converse that I bought for Clemmie? I need a new pair too, but maybe not in pink…}

20140503-170733.jpg

{I met up with a good friend yesterday for a quick catch up over coffee and a to-die-for slice of almond cake. The perfect way to start the weekend. And it’s a three-day one which makes it even better!}

Happy Saturday to you all! X

Five on Friday

nails1

I cleared out my old nail polishes and stocked up on a new colour (Smokin’ Hot by Essie – in a gorgeous deep grey with purple undertones) as well as a fast dry top coat by Morgan Taylor called Need for Speed

Daim1 - edit

It’s half term this week so on a rainy afternoon the children and I made these yummy Daim biscuits (as well as an almighty mess in the kitchen but these babies were well worth it)

Izzy Blow

I finally booked tickets to go and see the Isabella Blow exhibition Fashion Galore! at Somerset House. I’m going with a friend next Saturday – the day before it ends, talk about cutting it fine!

Tulips

My tulips from Valentine’s Day are still with us (just about). I saw a tip on the Internet which said that putting them in ice cold water made the flowers last longer. It seems to have worked.

Pretty-jars-980x735

I’ve also been decanting my kitchen staples like flour, sugar, pasta etc into glass jars (mostly from Ikea) and labeling them with these cute chalkboard labels from Not on the High Street. Looks so much better than lots of half full bags and packets spilling stuff everywhere.

Happy weekend everyone! X

The Beauty Edit: OPI + Coca Cola = Happiness in a Bottle

coke-opi-bottles_2822882a

It might seem like a crazy collaboration at first glance but soft drinks giant Coca Cola has teamed up with OPI to launch a line of nail polishes. The seven shades are inspired by the iconic packaging of some of our most popular carbonated beverages such as Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, Coke Zero, Cherry Coke, Vanilla Coke, Sprite and Fanta.

Nail colour queen Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, OPI co-founder and executive vice president said: “These two iconic brands truly deliver happiness in a bottle – whether it’s a refreshing, invigorating sip of Coke or a set of fingers and toes perfectly polished with OPI nail lacquer.”

The new line will hit shelves in June, so this summer we could be sporting cheerful Coke red talons while quenching our thirst with ‘the Real Thing’.

This latest link-up follows OPI’s collaboration with singer and fashionista Gwen Stefani on a capsule range of punk inspired colours. From the hot red Over & Over A-Gwen to the charcoal satin 4 in the Morning and the pale gold Love.Angel.Music.Baby (named after Gwen’s fashion label L.A.M.B), the colours epitomise Gwen’s unique style.

This Week’s Favourites

This weeks Collage

This week has whizzed by as I knew it would. It’s funny how in the summer holidays time seems to slow down but as soon as school starts – and with it the relentless routine of school run, homework, after school clubs and weekend activities – I hardly have time to blink and it’s Sunday night yet again. Despite the rain (yes I know, I will stop going on about the weather soon!) it has been a good week, catching up with friends I haven’t seen for six weeks and watching the boys settle happily into their new classes.

Now all the kids are in bed and we’re just about to watch a movie – probably The Oranges with Leighton Meester who played Blair in one of my favourite TV series, Gossip Girl. But first, here is a quick round-up of the last few days: Clemmie started ballet class this week and amazingly didn’t cry when I left her there (it probably helped that she was with her best friend); The Chanel nail polish in Particuliere is one of my favourite autumn hues; I finally got to wear some of my Fall purchases such as this knitted jacket from River Island and tiered sweater from Anthropologie; My bargain of the week was this floral tube scarf from H&M for £6.99; I’ve also been digging deep into my wardrobe and uncovered some old favourites like these Miu Miu heels that I bought for my hen night 12 years ago. I wore them with the Anthropologie sweater and skinny jeans for a night out with friends; A morning latte to brighten up a drizzly morning; In our house weekends mean pancakes for breakfast; One of the best things about Autumn is snuggling up on the sofa to watch a film with candles lit on the mantlepiece.

And that my friends is exactly what I’m going to do now. Hope you’ve had a lovely weekend. X

The Beauty Edit: Hard as Nails

essie-winter-2013-shearling-darling-collection

This picture is the first glimpse of the upcoming Essie Winter 2013 Shearling Darling nail polish collection which is due to hit stores in October. The six new nail colours range from rich, dark burgundy and light pastel shades of lilac and frosty blue to a darker grey-blue and pearly rosy brown. The lighter shades are a surprising addition to a winter collection and, while I think they would look pretty with a tan, I prefer a dark polish in the colder months. My personal favourite is probably the namesake of the range, Shearling Darling, closely followed by Sable Collar and Parka Perfect. Which is yours?

I’m a complete sucker for anything ‘limited edition’ or ‘exclusive’, and if it’s for a good cause then so much the better. This beauty bag designed by make-up maestro Charlotte Tilbury features lipstick kisses by, among others, Kate Moss, Sienna Miller and Stella McCartney. Sold exclusively at Selfridges, it’s a steal at £15 and all profits go to the charity Kids Company which supports vulnerable children in London.

And, of course, while I was on the Selfridges website I couldn’t resist having a little click-around (although I did restrict myself to the beauty section). I’m a big fan of Laura Mercier’s make-up range and I’ve been using her tinted moisturiser for over 15 years now, while more recent additions to my beauty arsenal include the cream blusher, Secret Camouflage concealer and Caviar eyeliner. Her new Dark Spell Collection has just launched  (again, exclusively at Selfridges) and I love the limited edition nail polishes in Bewitched – a deep forest green with flecks of golden shimmer, which (dare I say it) will be spot on for autumn – and Forbidden, a silky silver taupe suitable for all occasions. The Spellbound face illuminator – a fine milled powder with a soft rose gold shimmer that is perfect for highlighting – also caught my eye and, after reading a few online reviews, I think it could easily become a ‘Can’t Live Without’ beauty staple.
