Summer Vibes

Summer Collage1

The fact that I’m writing this post while gazing out of the window at a grey sky and spitting rain only serves to fuel my desire to escape to sunnier climes as soon as possible. Sitting at my desk with a woolly cardigan draped around my shoulders and my feet snugly ensconced in a pair of slippers, it seems like the ideal time to start planning my summer wardrobe. While the sun may elude us here in London, we do have a holiday planned to Mallorca, which means at least one week of guaranteed beach weather this summer (a vast improvement on last year as I can only recall one or two days of glorious sunshine). So here are some of the items I would like to be packing into my suitcase come August:

  1. A pair of denim shorts are a perennial summer staple and these ones from Gap have just the right amount of distressing so they look naturally casual rather than too try-hard.
  2. I rarely wear high heels in summer and these silver espadrilles from Whistles are smart enough to take you from beach to bar while still being supremely comfortable.
  3. The soft sheen of rose gold looks fabulous against tanned skin and this stunning Astley Clarke moonstone pendant can be worn on its own or layered with other delicate necklaces.
  4. I tend to stick to a neutral or monochrome colour palette all year round but it’s fun to liven up an outfit with brightly coloured accessories such as this beach bag by Sophie Anderson. Inspired by the designer’s travels in Colombia, the roomy tote has been handcrafted by the country’s skilled weavers.
  5. This gorgeous dress from Isabel Marant’s Étoile collection has popped up in my Bloglovin’ feed quite a few times over the past month or so. The drop waist silhouette and soft ruffles are universally flattering and while it qualifies as an investment piece rest assured that this is a dress that you will want to keep wearing long after the temperatures drop.
  6. Simple but oh so stylish, this striped romper is the kind of thing I imagine chic Parisian girls wear on their annual summer jaunts to the Riviera. Pair with huge shades and a wide brimmed hat to truly channel your inner Brigitte Bardot.
  7. An off the shoulder top is a must this summer and this one from H&M will look great with the Gap shorts or a pair of jeans on cooler days.
  8. Finally, a hat is also a necessity to protect your face, scalp and hair from the sun’s rays. To avoid it getting crushed in your suitcase it is best to wear it on the plane, which also helps you switch into holiday mode!

Christmas has come early!

IMG_9020

December got off to a very good start for me as I padded downstairs this morning to grab my morning coffee and spotted the much coveted Liberty Beauty Advent calendar in our living room! Someone has obviously been reading my blog…

IMG_9021

Even nicer in real life, this lovely advent calendar will definitely make it easier to get out of bed on grey and dreary mornings. Today’s drawer, decorated in pretty Liberty fabric, was hiding a Lavender and Wild Chamomile soap that smells absolutely divine.

I’ve resisted looking at the contents list that came with the calendar so that each day will be a surprise. And, as there aren’t any chocolates in there, just yummy beauty treats, the kids won’t be wrestling to get their hands on my Advent goodies! Plus it gives me a good excuse to blog every day when a new drawer is opened. So all in all a real winner. A huge thanks to my (not so secret) Santa.

And, of course, Happy December to you all!

Currently Coveting #27: The Liberty Christmas Calendar

Liberty Christmas Calendar

With only 36 days to go until Christmas Day, the festive countdown has well and truly begun. In a few days’ time I will have to go up into the loft to hunt down the children’s wooden advent calendar and put it on the mantlepiece, ready to be filled with chocolates on December 1. This year though I rather fancy an advent calendar of my own and, as much as I love chocolate, my sights are set on this beauty calendar from Liberty. With a gorgeous picture of the iconic Regent Street store on the front, inside each Liberty Print decorated box hides a decadent beauty treat, from skincare to scent and everything in-between. If you’ve ever visited Liberty’s Beauty Hall you will know what a fabulous selection of must-have beauty buys there is to choose from.

Winter Warmers

Winter Warmers Collage

The temperature has dropped in the last week or so and snuggle season is finally upon us. The temptation is to stay in, with the heating on and the fire lit, and get cosy on the sofa with a good book and a cup of hot chocolate. To make sure my feet stay warm I would ensconce them in the super soft cashmere bed socks from The White Company – a pair in every colour would do me just fine! Scented candles are a must at this time of year and, if Santa’s reading, the new vanilla candle by Diptyque is on my Christmas list.

But we all have to venture out into the cold at some point and for me the emphasis is definitely on staying warm. My children may be happy in short sleeves (and crocs if I let them get away with it!) even when the thermometer is showing single figures but I will be wrapped up in these cosy winter warmers. The Topshop padded parka jacket with borg lining is winging its way to me as we speak and I’m also contemplating ordering the cute pom pom knit beanie from Anthropologie. Add a pair off Uggs (if I didn’t already have a pair, I would invest in these boots with extra bling) and a cashmere snood like this one from Brora and I’m good to go.

I don’t know about you, but I’m hoping for snow this year!

New In For Autumn

Fall fashion

This week the weather took a distinctly autumnal turn with some crisp sunny days but also plenty of rain and wind. Personally I don’t mind one bit as it is a great excuse to stay indoors, light some candles and cosy up on the sofa. Soup is the perfect food on chilly days and today we had this delicious fish soup for dinner. The colder weather has also spurred me on to update my wardrobe for fall. I know one of my autumn resolutions was to stop spending but the best laid plans as they say…

Added to my existing wardrobe, these six pieces should see me through the next few months. Maybe just a pair of knee high boots and a new winter coat and then I’m done!

Interior Inspiration: Beautiful Boudoirs

We all know the importance of a good night’s sleep but lately I have to admit that I’ve been guilty of burning the candle at both ends with late nights and early mornings. It started on holiday when we would stay up late, drinking wine and enjoying the balmy weather and peaceful surroundings. Now that we’re back home I’ve ditched the wine but I’m still staying up late working, reading blogs and watching Orange is the new Black (I only started watching it a couple of weeks ago and am already on episode 9 of the second series..) With the holiday behind us, lie-ins are also a thing of the past especially as the boys start back at school tomorrow.

I know what I need to do: go to bed earlier, cut down on caffeine, avoid looking at the computer at least an hour before bedtime, have a warm bath in the evening etc. But in the meantime, just looking at these pictures of gorgeous, restful bedrooms (from my Pinterest board – where else?) is also helping me feel more relaxed. Which one is your favourite?

Denim shorts with a light, flowing top are a summer classic and when you’re on the go all day a pair of comfortable shoes are also a must in my book. Hot weather and ill-fitting footwear is one of the worst combinations ever! They’re not exactly Louboutins but wearing these Rieker sandals is like walking on air. I bought my first pair last summer and have just invested in a second pair. Seriously, if you’re planning to do a lot of walking this summer (sightseeing, to and from the beach etc) be sure to check them out. Your feet will thank you!

And with that I wish you all a happy Monday! X

Currently Coveting #25: Marc Jacobs Daisy Dream

Sometimes it pays to have friends in (literally) high places. I’m desperate to get my hands on the new Daisy Dream perfume from Marc Jacobs (worth getting for the bottle alone, I’m sure you would agree, but I have heard it is similar to the other Daisy fragrances which I love) but at the moment it is exclusive to World Duty Free. Sadly we have no travel plans until August so enter my friend who works for BA and has promised to try and get her hands on a bottle for me next week. Watch this space…

{1969 Destructed Real Straight Jeans – Gap ♥ Bracelet – Dyrberg Kern ♥ Slingback Wedges – Topshop ♥ OPI nailpolish in No Room for the Blues ♥ Burnout Raglan Tee – Topshop}

While being short (5’2″ in my case) has some advantages – like being able to buy clothes from the children’s section in H&M and never ever having to worry about towering over your other half when wearing heels – there are also some major drawbacks. I have been desperate to get hold of some distressed jeans but all the ‘regular’ ones seems to have been made for all you peeps with lovely long legs. I tried a few on (from Zara, J Brand and Current Elliott) but they all looked really strange on me as rips that should have been on the knee ended up halfway down my calf.

Normally my go-to denim brand is Paige – their Skyline Ankle Peg style is just the right length and fit for shorties like me, but they didn’t have any distressed styles. Then I came across these Gap 1969 Destructed Real Straight Jeans, which are also available in an ‘ankle’ length. Only problem was, my size was out of stock both online and in every London store (I had my poor husband check all the Gap stores on Oxford Street and rang the others myself) until last week when they suddenly flashed up on the website and I managed a snag a pair before they sold out again. The fit is not quite as good as my Paige jeans but then again they’re only a third of the price and I can easily see them becoming my perfect summer staple.

The Beauty Edit: Summer Wishlist

Summer Beauty Collage

Summer is finally here and it’s time to ditch the heavy makeup and opt instead for a lighter, more natural look. As much as I love an opulent  smoky eye and decadent red lip, it just doesn’t look right on sunny evenings. Here are some of the beauty products I’m planning to invest in this season:

1 Dior ‘Nail Glow’ – A slightly pink nail polish that enhances the natural colour of your nails to give them a light, healthy sheen.

2. St Tropez Self Tan Luxe Dry Oil – A moisturising non-greasy formula that gives a long lasting natural looking tan.

3. Laura Mercier Body Butter in Almond Coconut Milk – I always associate the smell of coconut with summer and this body butter is the ultimate in luxurious skincare.

4. Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb La Vie En Rose – A lighter version of my favourite fragrance that comes in a bottle “inspired by the iridescent wings of a butterfly”. What’s not to love?

5. Nars Matte Multiple in Anguilla – A non-sparkly version of the cult cheek & lip stick in a selection of vibrant and sun-kissed shades.

6. Clarins Rouge Eclat in Juicy Clementine –  The perfect lipstick for fair-skinned people like myself who want to embrace this summer’s trend for orange lips. Plus the name reminds me of my lovely daughter!

7. Mac Prep + Prime Highlighter – A pen-style highlighter that can be used over or under makeup to add radiance and a sheer wash of colour.

8. Ghd White Eclipse – I know it’s not great for my hair but I use my ghd hair straightener every day. This new version promises to style your hair in a single stroke while actually making it stronger.
