Five on Friday

{A takeaway latte and almond croissant to start off yet another grey January morning. No New Year health kick for me although I have been to the gym twice this week so I refuse to feel guilty about the little treats}

{These lovely colourful bulbs outside our local florist were a timely reminder that spring IS on its way. If our house wasn’t a building site I would have bought some to brighten up the place}

{I’m enjoying trying out all the beauty products from my Liberty London advent calendar. So far my favourites are the Kiehls body lotion, the Laura Mercier lipgloss and the Dr Sebagh repair serum}

{I don’t mind the cold as much as the rain and this week we have had some lovely crisp sunny days. I snapped this picture on a late afternoon walk}

{My husband and I are going away for the weekend to Amsterdam at the start of next month. It will be the first time that we are both away from the children for more than one night but I am confident that they will have a great time with their grandparents. Lots of shopping, sightseeing and dinners/cocktails à deux are on the agenda}

Hope you all have a great weekend! X

The Beauty Edit: Wave Goodbye to Chapped Hands

IMG_9363

{The Laura Mercier La Petite Patisserie Hand Crème Quartet comes in a long tube – just the right size to fit in a Christmas stocking!}

One of my favourite stocking fillers this Christmas (thank you Santa!) was Laura Mercier’s La Petite Patisserie Hand Crème Quartet. I have dry skin anyway and my hands always look terrible in the winter – chapped and scaly with a texture like sandpaper. The only thing that keeps the dryness at bay is religiously applying cream every time my hands have been in water, but it is so easy to forget. This pack of four 1 oz. tubes of luxurious handcream means that I can keep one in the bathroom, kitchen, bedroom and my handbag. With four delicious fragrances – Almond Coconut Milk, Crème Brulée, Crème de Pistache and Fresh Fig – an added bonus is that your hands are not only velvety soft but also smell good enough to eat. In fact, when I was putting my son to bed last night after applying the Crème Brulée hand cream he said ‘Mummy your hands smell like sweeties!’ High praise indeed!

I’m a complete sucker for anything ‘limited edition’ or ‘exclusive’, and if it’s for a good cause then so much the better. This beauty bag designed by make-up maestro Charlotte Tilbury features lipstick kisses by, among others, Kate Moss, Sienna Miller and Stella McCartney. Sold exclusively at Selfridges, it’s a steal at £15 and all profits go to the charity Kids Company which supports vulnerable children in London.

And, of course, while I was on the Selfridges website I couldn’t resist having a little click-around (although I did restrict myself to the beauty section). I’m a big fan of Laura Mercier’s make-up range and I’ve been using her tinted moisturiser for over 15 years now, while more recent additions to my beauty arsenal include the cream blusher, Secret Camouflage concealer and Caviar eyeliner. Her new Dark Spell Collection has just launched  (again, exclusively at Selfridges) and I love the limited edition nail polishes in Bewitched – a deep forest green with flecks of golden shimmer, which (dare I say it) will be spot on for autumn – and Forbidden, a silky silver taupe suitable for all occasions. The Spellbound face illuminator – a fine milled powder with a soft rose gold shimmer that is perfect for highlighting – also caught my eye and, after reading a few online reviews, I think it could easily become a ‘Can’t Live Without’ beauty staple.

The Beauty Edit: Lighten up for summer

IMG_2348

Space NK is like a candy store for grown ups, full of expensive but oh-so-tempting treats. I don’t think I’ve ever gone into one of their shops and come out empty-handed, even if I wasn’t intending to buy anything. I don’t wear that much makeup and I would rather spend a bit more on a few choice products than clutter up my makeup bag with items I don’t need. That’s not to say that I don’t rate budget beauty brands – I love online beauty retailer E.l.f for instance, where you can pick up a new lipstick or eye shadow for a couple of pounds.

Lipgloss2

My number one desert island product that I don’t leave the house without is lipstick or gloss. In fact I would probably forgo mascara if it meant leaving my lips bare. In winter I like strong plums and reds but in summer it’s nice to keep things a bit lighter, especially when you’ve got a tan (fake or real). I’ve been searching for ages for the perfect lipgloss – not too pale and with a blue undertone rather than gold or brown. This week I found it, while out on a shopping trip with a couple of girlfriends. The Laque de Rose in Rose Romance from By Terry looks almost neon bright in the bottle but is the perfect skin-flattering shade of pink on the lips with just the right amount of shimmer.

Blush

I also bought a new cream blusher from Laura Mercier in Rosebud, a suit-all pink that again is perfect for summer, and a heat protecting styling spray by Percy & Reed. The latter is essential for a Ghd addict like myself and will hopefully stop my hair from becoming straw-like due to the constant straightening and curling I put it through.

Finally, I popped into Boots to grab a bottle of Essie nailpolish in Ballet Slippers, my go-to polish for a glam yet understated manicure.
