Pinterest Puts the Spotlight on Fashion Week

London Final

London Fashion Week may be officially over for another season but those who have not had their appetite for catwalk creations sated can still log onto Pinterest to get their LFW fix.

Pinterest has created a specific url for all things fashion week related where boards are divided into sections including London, Paris, Milan and New York as well as up and coming designers. As always with Pinterest, there is virtually limitless inspiration to soak in, from catwalk trends and street style to backstage beauty and front row outfits to name but a few.

Among my favourite fashion week boards are those created by Sasha Wilkins of LibertyLondonGirl.com (link), Navaz Batliwalla, who’s behind the super successful blog Disneyrollergirl (link) and also Free People’s Street Style Captured board (link) which appeals to the voyeur in me.

Oxford Street Brings LFW to the Masses

campaign-homepage1

Oxford Street has never been my favourite shopping destination – too noisy, too crowded and too touristy. Its only saving grace is Selfridges but it’s been years since I ventured further east than the iconic yellow signs of the largest department store on the 1.5 mile long shopping street.

But this month Oxford Street is hosting the most influential fashion campaign of its 150 year history and it may be just the thing to tempt me back. In celebration of London Fashion Week, Oxford Street has teamed up with the British Fashion Council to give shoppers an insider glimpse into the fashion industry. Over 15 of the street’s most internationally recognizable fashion emporiums, from Selfridges, Topshop and River Island to John Lewis, House of Fraser, H&M and Gap have provided a range of exclusive experiences such as fashion forums, guest star interviews, makeovers, blogging workshops, celebrity pop-up DJs, in-store styling sessions and fashion career mentoring.

Even if you can’t get there in person you can still be part of the experience, as shoppers from across the globe will be able to get their fashion fix 24/7 with the launch of Oxford Street TV and real time store updates via social media. In addition, Oxford Street has collaborated with London Fashion Week designers, including House of Holland and Alice Temperley, to dress the street with 75 fashion flags, each illustrating the very best of the British fashion industry.

“This season we have taken fashion week to the streets of London and rallied support from the whole capital by making London Fashion Week much more inclusive,” British Fashion Council Chairman Natalie Massenet said in an opening speech on Friday. “Anyone, all of us are free to come down and join.”

Personally, I think that anything which gets people interested in fashion and supporting the industry, including events such as LFW,  is a good thing. What do you think? Do you welcome the democratization of designer fashion or do you think it’s wrong that the high street is ‘cashing in’ on London Fashion Week?

London Fashion Week – From a Distance

Britain London Fashion Week S/S 2014 - House of Holland

(House of Holland SS14)

It may not be as sleek as its New York, Milan and Paris counterparts (according to the media anyway) but I love the edginess of London Fashion Week and the sense that anything (on or off the catwalk) could happen. With established fashion houses such as Burberry and Paul Smith rubbing shoulders with lesser known up-and-coming designers, London is arguably the most creative and innovative of the fashion capitals.

It is with a slight sense of nostalgia that I’ve been following this season’s proceedings. A few years ago I would have been there in person – not exactly in the front row, but near enough to soak up the atmosphere and see all the action up close. While the live streaming is pretty amazing, the most fun part of fashion week for me was always watching the people in and around the venues. I think you can get as much, if not more, style inspiration from the audience sitting (or standing) around the catwalk as you can from the models walking down it.

One thing I don’t miss, however, is waking up at 6am and agonizing over what to wear to the shows. Especially on a day like today when I’m sitting here wrapped up in a blanket and nursing a cup of hot water with honey and lemon to soothe my sore throat. The definite downside to autumn is the cold and flu viruses that start doing the rounds as soon as the leaves turn yellow.

But enough about my runny nose and on to some of my favourite runway looks from LFW so far:

This Week’s Favourites

This weeks Collage

This week has whizzed by as I knew it would. It’s funny how in the summer holidays time seems to slow down but as soon as school starts – and with it the relentless routine of school run, homework, after school clubs and weekend activities – I hardly have time to blink and it’s Sunday night yet again. Despite the rain (yes I know, I will stop going on about the weather soon!) it has been a good week, catching up with friends I haven’t seen for six weeks and watching the boys settle happily into their new classes.

Now all the kids are in bed and we’re just about to watch a movie – probably The Oranges with Leighton Meester who played Blair in one of my favourite TV series, Gossip Girl. But first, here is a quick round-up of the last few days: Clemmie started ballet class this week and amazingly didn’t cry when I left her there (it probably helped that she was with her best friend); The Chanel nail polish in Particuliere is one of my favourite autumn hues; I finally got to wear some of my Fall purchases such as this knitted jacket from River Island and tiered sweater from Anthropologie; My bargain of the week was this floral tube scarf from H&M for £6.99; I’ve also been digging deep into my wardrobe and uncovered some old favourites like these Miu Miu heels that I bought for my hen night 12 years ago. I wore them with the Anthropologie sweater and skinny jeans for a night out with friends; A morning latte to brighten up a drizzly morning; In our house weekends mean pancakes for breakfast; One of the best things about Autumn is snuggling up on the sofa to watch a film with candles lit on the mantlepiece.

And that my friends is exactly what I’m going to do now. Hope you’ve had a lovely weekend. X

OOTD – All Plaid Out

I love the plaid trend for Fall and one of my best purchases so far this season is a grey check roll-sleeve shirt from Topshop.

Plaid1

The shirt looks like it could do with a good ironing session in this photo but I had just got back from a friend’s birthday party where I spent most of my time trying to stop three-year-old Clemmie from being jumped on by the bigger children on the bouncy castle (in the pouring rain, hence the frizzy hair!).

Here it is accessorized with the aforementioned three-year-old. I love the muted colours and the crochet detailing on the shoulders.

Let it Rain!

Hunter

If this last week is anything to go by, we’re in for a rainy autumn here in England (yet again). About the only thing to lift my spirits on a dull day when it’s pouring outside is putting on my shiny black Hunter wellies. Style and comfort is an unbeatable combination and if you add a pair of welly socks your feet will stay toasty no matter how hard it rains.

Now the iconic British brand has teamed up with New York based cool-kid-on-the-block Rag & Bone in a collaboration that has set the fashion world’s pulses racing. The collection, which hits stores this week, includes two different styles of classic military inspired rain-boots – a tall equestrian fit and a short motorcycle boot. Both styles come in Fall colours such as burgundy, navy, black and army green and the design details are unmistakenly Rag & Bone with gunmetal rivet hardware and zips lending a tough edge to the classic welly.

Commenting on the thinking behind the collaboration, David Neville, the co-managing partner of Rag & Bone, said: “Hunter may be a quintessential British brand but we also always see so many women on the streets of Manhattan wearing their boots. Not only is this testament to the brand’s global appeal, it resonated with us as we are British guys living in New York. We are really excited about this collaboration.”

I never thought I’d say it, but bring on the rain!

Autumn Resolutions

Autumn-Resolutions-630x200

Forget New Year, for me autumn is all about new beginnings. It must be a hangover from my schooldays when September signified the start of a new school year – new teacher, shiny new shoes and a sparkling pencil case bursting with freshly sharpened pencils and smelly erasers (remember those?). As I got older these new purchases would accompanied by a resolve to be more organised and punctual – sometimes with varying results.

Even though it is now my children (well two out of three of them) rather than me who go off to school at the end of the summer, I have made a list of resolutions for this autumn:

1. Be more adventurous in the way I dress. By this I don’t mean that I’ll slavishly follow trends that don’t suit me but just put a bit more thought into what I wear on a day-to-day basis. As a stay at home mum and occasional freelancer it is so easy to fall into the habit of just throwing on the school run uniform of jeans/T-shirt/flat shoes every morning. So it is time to delve a bit deeper into the wardrobe.

2. Accessorise more. Adding a few bangles or a scarf is such an effective way to update an outfit but often I wear no jewellery other than my engagement and wedding rings. Doing a few more OOTD posts should hopefully help keep both number 1 and 2 on track.

3. Exercise regularly. I am a stop-start exerciser and I’ll be really good for a few months and then I’ll do nothing for for another few months. Over the summer I haven’t done anything at apart from a couple of yoga classes so it’s time to start again and, this time, keep it up. I am a fully paid up member of my local gym so, come rain or shine, there can be no more excuses.

4. Be more organsied. I usually start off the new term pretty well with a weekly menu plan and the kids’ uniforms, PE bags etc laid out the night before. By mid October however they are scrambling around for clean shirts at 8.15am and, come tea time, I am improvising meals (fish fingers again?). This time I am determined to turn my good intentions into lasting habits.

5. Live in the moment. Multi-tasking can be a great thing, allowing you watch your favourite TV show while completing mundane jobs like ironing or folding the washing. But sometimes I find myself checking emails (or writing blog posts!) while helping my son with his homework or playing tea party with my daughter. I am acutely aware that since having children time seems to have sped up and before I know it they will all be teenagers so I am going to try harder to be fully present when I’m with them.

So there you have it, my five point plan to kick start the autumn. And the good thing about making resolutions in the autumn is that new year is less than four months away so if you fail to keep them you can always start afresh on New Years Day!

The Fashion Clinic #6: Fall Essentials

Autumn Collage

One of the best things about Autumn has to be the clothes – cosy cashmere jumpers, lots of colourful scarves, thick ribbed tights and ankle boots. Don’t get me wrong, I love balmy summer days when you can just pull on a sundress and slip on a pair of flip flops but unless you can afford to escape for the whole summer, how many outings is that strappy dress really going to get?

A quality piece of knitwear on the other hand will see you through until April or even May (at least if you live in the UK). If my past experience of the English weather is anything to go by, a light jacket or heavy cardigan will usually suffice as a cover-up until mid November. I’ve had my eye on the Fortuna cardigan (8) by Swedish design trio Dagmar since I first spotted it in a store in Gothenburg two years ago, but the hefty price tag forced me to walk away. So when I saw it reduced by 30% on Farfetch I was quick to snap it up and it’s now hanging in my closet waiting for the temperature to drop.

Odd Molly’s Knit Jacket (6) is another design that I never tire of. The fit is universally flattering and it looks great teamed with skinny jeans or an A-line skirt which are two of my Fall/Winter staples. When it comes to denim, I tend to stick to the shapes that I know suit me and these Skyline Ankle Peg jeans by Paige (5) have been my go-to style for the last couple of years. With a 29″ leg measurement they’re the perfect length for a shorty (5′ 2″) like me.

“Any colour as long as it’s pink” proclaims the cover of this month’s Vogue and who am I to argue? I love this pale pink sweatshirt by Clu with feminine ruffles along the bottom (2). H&M’s take on the dressed-up sweatshirt (1) is a snip at £29.99 and the imitation leather skirt (9) from the same store is one of those versatile day-to-night pieces.

Also on my wishlist this season are these fab go-with-everything black ankle boots from Whistles (7) and a checked shirt with crochet detailing on the shoulders from high street fave Topshop (10). And let’s not forget the accessories – I already own about a zillion scarves but this neon pink one by Becksondergaard (3) would brighten up any dull winter’s day. I discovered Stella & Dot last year when they had a stall at my son’s school Christmas fair and their jewellery is amazing and not too pricey. At the moment I’ve got my eye on this Renegade Cluster bracelet (4) which is apparently a favourite of singer Katy Perry.

Currently Coveting #8: The Perfect Autumn Knit

28555761_012_b

Anthropologie is hands down my favourite store to visit and have a browse around. It’s like a treasure trove full of lovely clothes, accessories and homeware, all beautifully displayed in an old building where every nook and cranny reveals more hidden gems. At the moment, however, as I don’t relish a shopping trip into town with three children in tow, the online store will have to suffice.

This lightweight sweater by Knitted & Knotted is perfect for early Autumn days when a chill is just starting to creep into the air. The cream colour makes it wonderfully versatile while the cute ruffles stop it from being another boring basic. Add a statement necklace (as in the picture above) and it’s smart enough to wear for evenings out. What’s not to like? And yes, I have already ‘clicked to buy’ so I will let you know if the real thing lives up to the online promise.

Strike a pose…..and relax!

KeyLooks-Q3-YCORE-v3-FINAL

This morning I went to my first yoga class in a very long time. Before the kids came along I was a member of a gym with an amazing yoga instructor and I used to go three times a week. Then after I had Cameron I switched to a more family friendly gym with a creche and while I tried a few yoga classes there, I didn’t gel with any of the instructors.

While I’ve carried on doing other forms of exercise and am fairly happy with my general fitness, I have noticed that I’m not very flexible these days. I don’t harbour any hopes of being able to do the splits again but at the moment I can’t even touch my toes when I bend over (and I imagine that as I get older it will only get worse..)

It’s easy to dismiss yoga as ‘not real exercise’ as, unless you attend a fast moving Ashtanga or Bikram class, you’re unlikely to work up much of a sweat. But this morning’s session reminded me of the many other benefits of yoga. I have to admit that when the alarm went off at 8.15am (on a Sunday!) I was tempted to pick up the phone and cancel but I’m so glad I didn’t. For the rest of the day I felt calmer than I have in a long time – even the children jumping off the sofa and throwing all the cushions on the floor didn’t disrupt my relaxed state.

I will definitely go again and try to combine yoga with running, swimming and other gym classes. On a superficial level I’m also excited about being able to invest in some lovely yoga clothes and as always Sweaty Betty has a great selection. But maybe I should attend a few more classes before I reach for my purse…
