Porter magazine

I’m a sucker for a glossy magazine and, although I buy fewer now that so much content is readily available online, a tantalising cover will always draw me in. And so it was that a copy of Porter somehow found its way into my possession when I was browsing the shops in Gloucester Road after a meeting last week.

{Gisele graces the cover of the launch issue}

A brand new publication from the team behind online luxury store Net-a-Porter it claims to be “the fashion magazine for the stylish, intelligent woman of now”. Just as with the retail operation, the magazine oozes pure luxury so don’t expect to find any ‘Get the look for less’ or ‘More dash less cash’ features. The fashion, as one would expect, is nothing short of spectacular with dresses by the likes of Lanvin, Versace and Louis Vuitton (and plenty of POA – price on application…)

The beauty features are refreshingly down to earth and, unlike some mags, seem to be targeted at a wide age range, not just 20-sonethings with flawless skin. Mixed in with the high octane glamour are some more meaty reads such as an interview with Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Lynsey Addario who was kidnapped in Libya in 2011. There is also a 12-page spread dedicated to actress Uma Thurman (who, funnily enough, I had just been thinking about a couple of days before I bought the magazine) and shorter profiles on designer L’Wren Scott and J.Crew creative director Jenna Lyons. An impressive line-up of contributors includes photographer David Bailey (on his banned documentary about Andy Warhol), movie mogul Harry Weinstein (on the allure of silver-screen star Grace Kelly) and shoe maestro Manolo Blahnik who writes about the return of the mule.

I’m not sure why, or even if I’m alone in this, but I always read the back page of a new magazine first. And Porter magazine doesn’t disappoint: its back page, appropriately if somewhat unoriginally, entitled ‘Last word’, is dedicated to wrap dress queen Diane von Furstenberg.

All in all, as one would expect from the brand headed up by Natalie Massenet, one of the most powerful women in fashion, this is a confident launch that manages to stand out in a crowded market at a time when many are predicting the demise of Old Media. I , for one, can’t wait for the next issue of the bi-monthly publication to hit the shelves…

My Spring Wish List

Spring Wish List

As the first day of spring is less than four weeks away, I think it is perfectly legitimate to start thinking about updating the wardrobe for slightly warmer weather. Here in the UK, we’re not likely to get any really hot days until June at least so layering is the name of the game when it comes to trans-seasonal dressing. In many ways this is my favourite time of year: when you can dispense with the heavy winter coat and warm boots in favour of a light jacket and ballet flats. Just make sure you’re carrying a bag big enough to hold both an umbrella and sunglasses!

Here are some of my favourite pieces for Spring 2014:

1. Printed leather ballet flats, £325 by Miu Miu at Net-a-Porter

2. Grey lace hem skater skirt £20 from Topshop

3. Embroidered Nerine top, £98 from Anthropologie

4. Table Cloth Scarf in Lite Chalk, £149 from Odd Molly

5. Jacket in a textured weave, £29.99 from H&M

6. Grineeh printed bag, £199 from By Malene Birger

7. Zippy Knit in pink ash, £149 by Hunky Dory

Five on Friday

I cleared out my old nail polishes and stocked up on a new colour (Smokin’ Hot by Essie – in a gorgeous deep grey with purple undertones) as well as a fast dry top coat by Morgan Taylor called Need for Speed

Daim1 - edit

It’s half term this week so on a rainy afternoon the children and I made these yummy Daim biscuits (as well as an almighty mess in the kitchen but these babies were well worth it)

Izzy Blow

I finally booked tickets to go and see the Isabella Blow exhibition Fashion Galore! at Somerset House. I’m going with a friend next Saturday – the day before it ends, talk about cutting it fine!

Tulips

My tulips from Valentine’s Day are still with us (just about). I saw a tip on the Internet which said that putting them in ice cold water made the flowers last longer. It seems to have worked.

Pretty-jars-980x735

I’ve also been decanting my kitchen staples like flour, sugar, pasta etc into glass jars (mostly from Ikea) and labeling them with these cute chalkboard labels from Not on the High Street. Looks so much better than lots of half full bags and packets spilling stuff everywhere.

Happy weekend everyone! X

Currently Coveting #17: The Many Shoes of Carrie Bradshaw’s Closet

p-carrie_500x669_a_1024x1024

As soon as I saw this poster on the fabulous Stalking Beauty blog, I knew I HAD to have it. As any Sex and the City obsessive will know, Carrie Bradshaw’s amazing shoe collection played almost as big a role in the series as the star herself. To me, nothing has replaced Carrie and her gang for pure fashion indulgence (Gossip Girl came close, but still not a patch on the weekly sartorial feast that was SATC) and I still regularly watch my favourite episodes on the box set.

In an ideal world, this poster would hang in my own spacious walk-in closet complete with shelves heaving with Manolos and Jimmy Choos. Sadly, that is but a dream (for the moment at least!) so I will have to find another place for it when it arrives. Wherever it goes I am sure it will provide me with daily inspiration…

A Spoonful of Style is now on Facebook!

I-did-it-crown1

Some of you eagle eyed readers may have spotted a row of pretty pastel coloured button on the top right corner of this page. I have finally added social media buttons for Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest and also – drumroll, please! – created a Facebook page for A Spoonful of Style. I am always immensely proud of myself when I master anything technical on the blog – I’m sure that for many bloggers these are very simple things to do but for a ‘non techie’ like me it is a real achievement! (I always worry that I will press the wrong button and ‘Pouff’ the whole blog will somehow be deleted!)

Anyway, the blog is still here and now with its very own FB page. So I now have a tiny little favour to ask of you: if you click here or on the ‘F’ button in the top right hand corner you will get to my Facebook page. Obviously there is no obligation whatsoever, but if you did feel like pressing the ‘Like’ button on my page, it would make my day!

The Beauty Edit: OPI + Coca Cola = Happiness in a Bottle

coke-opi-bottles_2822882a

It might seem like a crazy collaboration at first glance but soft drinks giant Coca Cola has teamed up with OPI to launch a line of nail polishes. The seven shades are inspired by the iconic packaging of some of our most popular carbonated beverages such as Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, Coke Zero, Cherry Coke, Vanilla Coke, Sprite and Fanta.

Nail colour queen Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, OPI co-founder and executive vice president said: “These two iconic brands truly deliver happiness in a bottle – whether it’s a refreshing, invigorating sip of Coke or a set of fingers and toes perfectly polished with OPI nail lacquer.”

The new line will hit shelves in June, so this summer we could be sporting cheerful Coke red talons while quenching our thirst with ‘the Real Thing’.

This latest link-up follows OPI’s collaboration with singer and fashionista Gwen Stefani on a capsule range of punk inspired colours. From the hot red Over & Over A-Gwen to the charcoal satin 4 in the Morning and the pale gold Love.Angel.Music.Baby (named after Gwen’s fashion label L.A.M.B), the colours epitomise Gwen’s unique style.

LFW Street Style

Edgier than Milan, cooler than Paris and more daring than New York, London’s street style is arguably the most captivating of all the fashion cities. As always you can get as much, if not more, fashion inspiration hanging around outside the catwalk venue as on the front row. Here’s my pick of the best LFW fashionistas:

London Fashion Week

Creative, fearless and innovative are just some of the buzzwords being touted by the media to describe this season’s London Fashion Week. Over 40 catwalk shows, as well as off-schedule shows, presentations and salons are crammed in to a whirlwind five days while an estimated 5,000 photographers are on hand to capture the trends and names set to shape this year’s fashions. With LFW, the BAFTA Film Awards and the Brit Awards all taking place this month, even the capital’s mayor Boris Johnson agrees that there is no better time to shine the spotlight on London’s creative talents.

As day four of the proceedings at Somerset House draws to a close, here is my pick of some of the best looks so far:

This Week’s Favourites

this week's faves 16:2

Happy Sunday everyone! I’m back with my weekly roundup – I do like these posts as they’re a great reminder of what we’ve been up to during the week, sometimes it just whizzes by so fast. Tomorrow is the start of half term and it couldn’t be more welcome – a week of no school run, homework or extracurricular activities.

1. We had promised Cameron a bike for his birthday back in November and last week we finally went and bought it. A very happy boy has been cycling to and from school this week.

2. Casper was very proud that his poem about Africa made it onto the display board at school. You can’t read it in the picture but I was impressed by the rhyming he used.

3. I finally got my hands on the new Porter magazine – and it didn’t disappoint.

4. Clemmie talking to her cousin in Sweden on her ‘phone’. Sometimes it’s very hard to have your family in a different country 😦

5. My husband bought me some beautiful flowers for Valentine’s Day.

6. The kids enjoying a movie night. It was Clemmie’s turn to choose so they all watched Sofia the First – the boys would never admit it of course, but I think they quite liked it!

7. More cycling! It was a lovely sunny day today so we got the bikes out and cycled around the neighbourhood after lunch.

8. Signs of spring are popping up everywhere, like this pretty lilac blossoms. Please, please, please let this be the last of the rain and the cold!

London

And then there was today: an afternoon spent up in London with one of my oldest and best friends (who I hadn’t seen for almost a year as she lives abroad. But that’s the beauty of a really strong friendship, you can just pick up where you left off), walking along the Southbank, people watching and enjoying a glass of bubbly in the sunshine.

The perfect end to the weekend! X

Hope you’re all having a lovely Saturday. After last night’s raging storm, we had rain and hail this morning which finally cleared away to leave us with a glorious sunny afternoon. Right now, a roast chicken is cooking in the oven, the children are playing quietly (probably up to no good but I’m prepared to ignore that for the moment) having been outside to burn off some of their energy, and I’m feeling virtuous after my workout at the gym this morning.

Here is a quick roundup of some of my favourite links from around the web this week:

1. Twelve things every home should have

2. Fourteen foreign films that will make you believe in crazy true love

3. An essential tool for all bloggers/Instagrammers: Take your selfies to another level with this Muku Shuttr iPhone camera remote control

4. The best street style accessories spotted at New York Fashion Week

5. Maybe it’s because I’m on a health kick at the moment but the mere sight of these banana cupcakes with cinnamon frosting on Pinterest made my mouth water

6. See all the latest home trends for spring 2014

7. Get the low-down on how to dress like one of my all-time favourite style icons, Sienna Miller

8. Stickygram comes up trumps again with this neat idea to transform your photos into magnetic jigsaws
