This Week’s Favourites

this week's faves 16:2

Happy Sunday everyone! I’m back with my weekly roundup – I do like these posts as they’re a great reminder of what we’ve been up to during the week, sometimes it just whizzes by so fast. Tomorrow is the start of half term and it couldn’t be more welcome – a week of no school run, homework or extracurricular activities.

1. We had promised Cameron a bike for his birthday back in November and last week we finally went and bought it. A very happy boy has been cycling to and from school this week.

2. Casper was very proud that his poem about Africa made it onto the display board at school. You can’t read it in the picture but I was impressed by the rhyming he used.

3. I finally got my hands on the new Porter magazine – and it didn’t disappoint.

4. Clemmie talking to her cousin in Sweden on her ‘phone’. Sometimes it’s very hard to have your family in a different country 😦

5. My husband bought me some beautiful flowers for Valentine’s Day.

6. The kids enjoying a movie night. It was Clemmie’s turn to choose so they all watched Sofia the First – the boys would never admit it of course, but I think they quite liked it!

7. More cycling! It was a lovely sunny day today so we got the bikes out and cycled around the neighbourhood after lunch.

8. Signs of spring are popping up everywhere, like this pretty lilac blossoms. Please, please, please let this be the last of the rain and the cold!

London

And then there was today: an afternoon spent up in London with one of my oldest and best friends (who I hadn’t seen for almost a year as she lives abroad. But that’s the beauty of a really strong friendship, you can just pick up where you left off), walking along the Southbank, people watching and enjoying a glass of bubbly in the sunshine.

The perfect end to the weekend! X

Love is in the Air

Happy Valentine’s Day! Are you doing anything special/romantic today? There was a time, many many years ago, when I would have been bitterly disappointed not to be taken out for dinner and wooed with flowers, chocolate and champagne on February 14. These days it’s a very different story – I think the last time my husband and I went out for a meal on Valentine’s Day was 12 years ago (pre-children anyway…) and I remember us both being struck by how ridiculous it felt. There we were, in one of London’s trendiest restaurants, sitting at a candlelit table for two squashed up right against another couple’s table, so close that we could not help but overhear every word they said, ordering food off an obscenely overpriced special ‘Valentine’s menu’. Intimate? Romantic? I think not.

So now we take a more low-key approach: a nice dinner at home, a glass of bubbly or two and maybe a card or flowers. Last year my husband surprised me by transferring our wedding video (yes we got married that long ago!) onto a DVD which he left on my pillow. We hadn’t watched the footage from our wedding day for a long time so it was lovely to relive all those memories, laugh at the speeches and silly dancing.

So I’m looking forward to a quiet night in, away from overpriced restaurants and enforced romance. But just in case my other half is reading this – honey, that bottle of Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb that you bought for my birthday has almost run out…

One of those days…

one-of-those-days

Now that I’m working four days a week, Tuesday is my one day off when Clemmie and I can see friends, go to the park or just relax at home. It is also the day that I catch up on jobs around the house – from the washing and ironing to paying bills and filing paperwork – so that it doesn’t all pile up for the weekend.

Today, however, I have done none of the above. Instead, I’ve spent close to three hours in a hospital waiting room and the rest of the time driving around in the car. As I’ve mentioned before, my eldest son has juvenile arthritis and because the medication he is on carries the risk of possible side effects he needs blood tests every six weeks. Until recently these were done by a mobile nursing team, who would come to our house, but for various reasons (they’re short staffed due to cut backs and he has switched from subcutaneous to oral medication) that stopped just before Christmas. So we now have to go to the local hospital to have the blood test done. Once a child is over eight years old this has to be done in the main walk-in clinic rather than by the paediatric nurses (seems very strange as you’re still under the care of a  paediatrician until the age of 18…but who am I to argue with the NHS?).

So off we went this morning having dropping Casper at school, amazingly found a parking space after only 15 minutes of circling around the car park (it has been known to take 40 minutes) and went up to the blood clinic where we were given a number ticket and told to wait for our turn. Turned out we weren’t the only ones who had the bright idea to come there on a Tuesday morning, as our ticket had number 75 on it and the display said they were currently dealing with patient number 32. Luckily I had brought lots of snacks and a couple of books and games to keep Cameron and Clemmie entertained – as it is an adult clinic it is not filled with brightly coloured toys like the children’s waiting rooms. Just under two hours later, they finally called our number and we went in, only to find that the blood form our doctor was supposed to have sent through to the clinic had not arrived. So then there was another 40 minutes of ringing the doctors’ surgery to get them to fax the form over so the blood test could be done (by this stage I was determined to get it done today as my son had already missed a whole morning of school).

Finally, we were done and I dropped my son off at school just before lunchtime. Got home, tidied up a bit and had just started making lunch for Clemmie and I when the phone rang. It was Cameron’s school, telling me that he had walked backwards into a brick wall while playing a game outside and had a big bump on the back of his head. Could I come and collect him please? So back in the car we went, collected Cameron from school and got a DVD out from the library which they’re now watching in the living room. I’ve finally had some lunch and in half an hour it’s time to pick up Casper.

So, yes one of those days! You’ll be pleased to hear that despite the quote at the top of the page I have not hit the bottle yet but I am looking forward to a large glass of wine this evening. And tomorrow, as they say, is another day! X

Spring is just around the corner!

frametastic

Maybe it’s just wishful thinking on my part as it’s still only February, but there are some signs that spring is on its way like these beautiful daffodils around the corner from our house.

Over the weekend we got a brief respite from the rain and took the opportunity to go outside and soak up some rays and much-needed vitamin D.

We went to the playground for the first time this year, which seems crazy, but the past few weeks have been so wet that many parts of the country are really suffering with flooding. Unfortunately it looks like the rain is set to return later this week but at least we got a taste of spring. Now I think I would be happy to skip the snow and go straight to warmer weather…

Linked In

Links I love

Everyday I’m stumblin’…Here are few links that I’m loving at the moment:

1. The older I get the less bothered I am about keeping up with the latest fashion trends so I was relieved to read that not falling victim to fly-by-night trends is one of the seven habits of highly stylish people! Find out what the other six are at StyleCaster

2. 16 Signs You’re A Little (Or A Lot) Type A. I’m not entirely proud that I read this article with a pang pf recognition. Just about all of those points apply to me, especially the sleeping (or lack of it) and worrying too much about things that may never happen

3. We’re in the process of upgrading our eldest son’s room to make it more suitable for a pre-teen. Out go the pirate cushions and in come these cool headphone bookends.

4. My default hairstyle when I’m not wearing it down is a messy bun or a simple braid but this week I’ve been trying out this cute dutch braid. Find a step-by-step tutorial here

5. How To Make Your Child Feel Special With Just 3 Magic Words .This article is a must-read for any parent out there. I’m a strong believer that you should not need to raise your voice in your own home but sometimes that’s easier said than done and life coach Lisa Parkes shows parents how to transform screaming to peaceful.

6. Great art doesn’t have to break the bank. We recently renovated our downstairs cloakroom and while I love the monochrome colour scheme the walls were looking a bit bare so I’ve ordered this limited edition print by Dutch fashion illustrator Judith van den Hoek from Swedish website Arte Limited.

In the Mist

Tuesdays are my day off work and Clemmie’s day at home from preschool so we usually try to do something fun in the morning after dropping the boys at school. Now that we’re finally having a respite from the relentless rainy weather, we decided to head to nearby Bushy Park for a walk (or scoot!) with our friends, followed by hot chocolate and croissants in the cafe.

It was a misty, but dry, morning and we all got some much-needed fresh air. For once, I remembered to bring the camera with me – I hadn’t taken any pictures since Christmas! Now it’s time to head off into the village to run some errands before school pick up but I will hopefully be back later with an awards post. X

This Week’s Favourites

A Gingerbread latte (I was pleasantly surprised that they were still on the menu even though Christmas is over) and mini muffin at Costa earlier this week while Cameron was at his tutor. The traffic was horrendous so I needed a quick energy boost to face the drive home.

Clemmie and her best friend on the way to pick up their older siblings from school. They have known each other since birth and, although they sometimes have their little squabbles, they are super cute together and you can tell they really love each other.

Finally made it to the cinema last night to see American Hustle and I was not disappointed. It is an excellent film and I’m not surprised it has received so many Oscar nominations.

During the week my breakfast tends to consist of a bowl of cereal eaten at my desk so on the weekends it is nice to make a bit more of an effort. These scones are a favourite of both mine and the kids and take no time at all to make.

Another purchase in the Sales – most likely my last this season – but I couldn’t resist these shoes by Poste Mistress which were reduced from £80 to £36.

I had some work to do tonight so apologies for the short post! But I’m firmly of the belief that, if time is scarce, it is better to write something rather than nothing. Hope you agree!

Have a fab Sunday night. X

Happy Weekend!

Saturday morning: coffee in bed while the children play downstairs. No school uniforms, packed lunches or getting out of the door by 8.30am. Now that I’m working again, weekends are even more precious – two whole days to recuperate, relax and gather our energies for next week.

Hope you have a fantastic weekend! X

This Week’s Favourites

I just sat down to write my weekly round up post and realised I only had four pictures (and none of them of actual people!) from this past week! I guess now that I’m working four days a week and not out and about so much, there aren’t so many photo opportunities (let’s face it, pictures of me hunched over the laptop with a cup of coffee are not that interesting).  It doesn’t help that it’s January – the month which is renowned for being devoid of social engagements – so hopefully things will pick up in the next few weeks. My mood has finally lifted over the weekend and I feel much more positive going into the new week – going for a run yesterday morning really helped so I’m planning to fit in a couple of sessions at the gym this coming week to try and hold on to those happy endorphins!

IMG_6006

I found this book in my bedside cabinet – I can’t remember where I got it but it made for entertaining reading on a train journey into London for a meeting this week. The book was first published in 2006 so some anecdotes were a bit out of date but it gave some interesting insights into the fashion industry.

IMG_5998

It finally stopped raining and the weather got cold (and sunny) enough for me to wear the Ugg boots I got for Christmas. I love Uggs – so warm and comfortable!

IMG_6002

Friday night TV dinner – spaghetti carbonara with a side salad and a nice glass of red – in front of Breaking Bad, of course. We’re now on the last series – what will we do when it’s all over? I’m hoping the second season of House of Cards is out soon…

I had planned to go to the movies with a friend last night to see American Hustle but we left it too late and when we tried to book online all three cinemas near us were sold out. We will have to try next weekend instead.

IMG_6005

A trip to Ikea was on the agenda today, to buy a new shelving unit for my eldest son’s room, storage boxes and all the other usual bits and pieces that magically seem to jump into our trolley every time we visit the Swedish superstore. I was fairly restrained today it has to be said as we’re still feeling the pinch from the Christmas blowout…

It’s almost 8pm so time to round up the kids (who are still downstairs riding the wave of that second wind of energy they seem to get as soon as bedtime approaches) and try to get them into bed. I’m determined that our mornings this week will be a lot more pleasant than they were last week…

Happy Sunday to you all! X

Happy Friday!

0d68918b1204bd5a43ab9cffa070280d

It’s been a long week and I, for one, am glad to see the end of it. Any illusions that we would all return to school and work well-rested and refreshed after the Christmas break were shattered on Monday when I literally had to drag the children out of bed before rushing to school in the pouring rain. I returned home with dripping wet hair and mascara streaks down my face – not a good look!

There’s not been much time for blogging – and even less inspiration I’m sad to say. But now we have arrived at the end of the week, the sun has shown its face for the first time in ages and my mood has slowly improved. A nice dinner tonight, a trip to the movies tomorrow night and a visit to Ikea on Sunday will hopefully chase away the last of the post-Christmas blues. Who knows, I may even make it to the gym this weekend to get my fill of endorphins!

Hope you all have a fabulous weekend wherever you are and whatever you’re doing! X
